You’re asking for proof? Do your own research, coz you won’t get those names from watching Boy or Kris in the Buzz or SNN. One advice though, beware of the balut vendor who sell his wares in the middle of the day, he may not have the freshest balut on hand but he has the juiciest stories in town. As I have said, I don’t want to name names. It might just open a can of worms which some ‘devout’ Catholics (who go to church daily but not yet even a feet away from the gates of porcta sancta is gossiping already on somebody) might find discomforting. All I am saying is that these people are also humans. . They are the best among the rest, but not all of them are perfect. They are not saints that some of us seem to put on a pedestal. Most of them have frailties just like you and me, ordinary mortals. But unlike us, the highest level of morality and sense of moral uprightness is required from them. Don’t get me wrong, I do not have anything against priests. I went to a school run by priests, I have relatives who are in the clergy and a best friend back in grade school for a priest.
The problem is that people has been tolerating the such things by closing their eyes and ears to problems of this kind plaguing the Church. Nabuenos pride themselves as being a pious and religious people, going to church almost hourly, to communions daily and to confessions almost weekly. Unfortunately we are also hypocrites, trying to live up to the standards required by our faith but paying blind to the transgressions of those who are supposed to be exemplars of morality. We play dumb, deaf and blind to such failings and do not even ask our leaders for accountability. We allow such things to be swept under the rug and the dirty linens buried forever in the pits of this Earth. That is the reason why Nabua is a coveted place to be assigned among priests. The town is a veritable goldmine with the most subservient parishioners. What more can one ask for? If you manage the money and the people wisely, who knows, you might end up a cardinal someday! Just bring in the money by “beautifying” the church – never mind if it’s a centuries-old church that one is ought to preserve and not tinker with! Hell, go and put up something where money can be made!
Gone are the times when priests led spartan lives. Nowadays, you see them in designer jeans and shirts, latest model cars (with a driver to boot!) and all expense paid trips abroad! Well, times have changed. Some parishes can afford all the luxuries they provide to their priests. But then again, there are a lot of places (Nabua included) where grinding poverty is not only a social issue but a religious responsibility too. Sad to say, we will never see the likes of Fr. Frank Navarro and Fr. Conrado Balweg ever in our lives again. They are only among the few priests who believed that serving the Lord is offering their lives to the service of the poor and the oppressed. Priests who are willing to risk their lives for the poorest of the poor and the downtrodden are very few and far between these days. Only Fr. Robert Reyes seems to have the guts to go against the tide and keep on running in service of the poor.
The Church as a whole is at a crossroads, faced with a dwindling flock and the ranks of the clergy plagued by scandals left and right. Add to that a declining number of people willing to embrace the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Vows that are growing harder to keep each day as the temptations of the flesh are becoming far stronger than the vows of celibacy. And unless the people and the Church acknowledge this problem and take stronger action other than assigning the guilty ones to far-away island parishes (hoping that the dirty sheets won’t be discovered and the foul air won’t reach its shores) there would always be wolves in sheep’s clothing preying on ‘innocent’ women and young delicious boys among the faithful. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil . . . but the devil will always be there lurking somewhere (especially in willing women out to bait the cute and handsome Fathers!). So how can we expect the church to support artificial family planning when they can’t even control the raging hormones of some of their members? The reason why this country has wallowed in poverty is because of uncontrolled sexual urges of millions and that include the Reverends! (Do you really think Padre Damaso is just a fictional creation of Pepe? Drop by the land of suha and be amazed why such a small place has such a large concentration of Kastilaloys so high up in the mountains!
) The only way for this country to improve its lot is to control its burgeoning population, and you would not be able to achieve that using any natural means possible.
In any case, this post is not about priests but rather about freedom. Not only about the freedom to use condoms, but the freedom to express what is on our mind. Miss/Mrs./Mr. Kanasusumo, I respect your opinion but I do not owe you an explanation or anything about me for you to understand my personality, because frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn. I may have an acerbic tongue but I am not as foul-mouthed as you are. It is not my intention to please you or anyone else when I post my views here. You may not like what I post but I am going to say or write what is on my mind. So if you find the things here not to your liking, it’s up to you. Either you read it or click that big red X button on the uppermost right hand corner of you screen and move on. We’re in the 21st century Mr. K, this is not the Spanish period when the Frailes acted as if they were gods, their word was the law and their voice was the voice of God. Only the Pope is infallible in the Church hierarchy and even he is taking flak for the sexual abuses caused by men of the cloth.
